Float 1764 failed to execute its first profile because it was damaged during deployment. It was deployed by the RV Palmer using a misapplied VOS method that uses ropes to reduce the free-fall distance. This method is required for the high freeboard of commercial cargo ships. However, the low freeboard and relatively small size (compared to cargo ships) of the Palmer makes this method unsuitable because waves heights can easily reach the deployment deck. The crew of the Palmer reported that a large wave smashed the boxed float against the side of the ship.
